About United Airlines

United Airlines is a low-cost American airline headquartered at Willis Tower in Chicago, Illinois. United was founded on April 6, 1926, as Varney Airlines, but later the name changed to Boeing Air Transport. In addition to the codeshare agreement, United Airlines has also entered into joint ventures with Air Canada, Air New Zealand, All Nippon Airways, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Lufthansa and Swiss International Airlines.

 

Chicago-O-Hare is the largest hub of the airline with seven others, namely Denver, Guam, Houston–Intercontinental, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco, and Washington–Dulles. As of now, United boasts a fleet of 790, all Boeing and Airbus aircraft. United Airlines and United Express carried more passenger traffic than any other airline in the world in the year 2012. Online Check-In

United Airlines offers you an online check-in facility through which you can easily check-in for your flight tickets from your home or office and print your boarding pass. United Online Check-in facility is available starting 24 hours before your scheduled departure. You can check-in for your flight in the following ways:

  • Enter your confirmation or electronic-ticket number and last name
  • Log in using your MileagePlus account information

 

You can also use the United App for online check-in process. Just show your boarding pass barcode on the screen of your mobile at the security checkpoint and when boarding your flight. Now you can also access your boarding pass for over 30 other United partner airlines. Airport Check-In

When you arrive at United departure airport, you can check-in for your flight in the following ways mentioned below:

  • Visit a United self-service kiosk, where you can print your boarding pass and check baggage
  • Take help of United representative at the United check-in counter

 

Please note that United Airlines check-in counters and kiosks do not accept cash as a form of payment. This applies to some of the airports operated by United Airlines.

For most United flights, a minimum required time for check-in and checking baggage is as follows:

  • For most United and United Express-operated domestic flights, passengers without checked baggage must check-in at least 30 minutes before departure.
  • For most United and United Express-operated domestic flights, passengers with checked baggage must check-in at least 45 minutes before departure.
  • For most United and United Express-operated international flights, passengers must check-in at least 60 minutes before departure.
  • For flights to/from Micronesia and the Marshall Islands, passengers must check-in at least 90 minutes before departure.

United Airlines offers various types of in-flight services on its flights. In-flight entertainment

United Airlines offers an excellent array of in-flight entertainment options to its passengers. The various in-flight entertainment options are as follows:

 

Personal device entertainment: It is a free service on select United flights that gives passengers access to movies and TV shows that can be watched on the passengers' own smartphones and laptops.

 

Seat-back on-demand:     DIRECTV is available on select United flights that offer seat-back screens equipped with 100 television channels and movies for free. This service is available on select Boeing 737 aircraft.  

 

United Private Screening: United Private Screening option is available on some aircraft only. This option lets you view the latest Hollywood hits, trending TV shows, music video playlists from VEVOand more through a seat-back monitor or your own personal device, depending on the aircraft. United Airlines has four Wi-Fi provides, Gogo, Panasonic, Thales, and ViaSat, each offering different coverage. Please note that internet coverage will vary for Boeing 757-200 and 757-300 aircraft, as three different providers cover them. United Airlines' inflight Wi-Fi facility allows you to access all the apps that you'd usually use on the ground. United Wi-Fi isn't free, and prices will vary by flight segment. Channel 9 is an exclusive feature on United Airlines that enables passengers to track the flights' progress, listen to pilots' communication with each other and ATC, and even be clued into delays before they are announced cabin-wide. Currently, United is the only domestic airline that offers this unique "From the Flight Deck" facility. United Economy Dining: United Economy Dining features a variety of options based on the length and location of your flight. International premium cabin dining: Passengers traveling in United Polaris business class and United Polaris first class on long-haul international flights will enjoy a fine dining experience. All food served is complementary, including arrival snacks and a 5-course meal. The premium cabin dining menus feature a chilled appetizer, salad, a choice of entree, a cheese course, and a selection of desserts, including United Airlines' signature customized ice cream sundae. Drinks & Alcohol

United Airlines flights have a full drink trolley service on their flights, including alcoholic beverages (beer, wine, spirits), soft drinks, and hot drinks. United First class of travel is available on most of the domestic flights, and the same cabin is called United Business on international flights. While traveling with United United First and Business class fare, you will receive Premier Access benefits as well as priority baggage handling and two free checked bags. Each seat has spacious seating designed for comfort and convenience, and there are also thoughtful storage spaces for your personal items, including an in-arm tablet or laptop slot, double seat-back pockets and a personal water bottle console. United Polaris Business Class

United Polaris Business Class service is available on select long-haul international flights, and it is all about providing you the best sleep in the sky. Carry-on Baggage

United Airlines allows one small personal item (shoulder bag, purse, laptop bag, or other small items) with total dimensions of (9 x 10 x 17 inches) or (22 x 25 x 43 cm), plus one cabin bag for free. The carry-on baggage (cabin bag) can be no larger than (9 x 14 x 22 inches) or (22 x 35 x 56 cm) including handles, wheels, and straps. However, the United Airlines Carry-on baggage allowance would be different for passengers traveling on a Basic Economy ticket. Basic Economy customers are not permitted to carry onboard a larger cabin bag. Basic Economy Fare customers may only bring on board one personal item with maximum dimensions of (9 x 10 x 17 inches) or (22 x 25 x 43 cm). If you're traveling in a Basic Economy fare and want to travel with a full-sized cabin bag, you'll be charged a $25 handling fee. 

 

In addition to your carry-on baggage and personal item, you can bring a jacket, an umbrella, reading material, food or merchandise that you buy in the airport, assistive devices (such as collapsible wheelchair, cane, crutches, medical equipment for prescription medications, or portable oxygen concentrator), a camera, a breast pump, a diaper bag, FAA-approved child restraint system or safety seat, and a pet carrier.

Flying with Children

Infants over seven days old and under two years old, on the date of travel, may fly for free as a lap child within the United States, Puerto Rico, and U.S. Virgin Islands. If infants traveling between the U.S. and Canada, or from Mexico to the U.S. or Canada, then you have to only pay taxes on the ticket. If infants traveling without a seat to other international destinations (including Guam) are charged 10 percent of the adult fare. Remember that children less than seven days old are not permitted to travel with United Airlines. If there are two or more infants travelings with the same adult, only one of the infants may travel as a lap child. Any additional infant is required to have tickets for their own seats. When you're booking your flight ticket, you must indicate that you are traveling with an infant, regardless of your destination.

 

Passengers over two years old and under 11 years old are classified as children, and you have to purchase the applicable Child Fare for the flight. If a child is traveling on their 12th birthday, adult fares should be booked.

 

Seating for infants and children

Passengers (below two-years-old) may travel on the lap of an adult passenger. Children who are not held by an adult and are unable to sit upright with the seat belt fastened must be carried in a Federal Aviation Administration-approved infant seat. Passengers traveling with a Basic Economy ticket also require an FAA-approved infant seat if you have purchased a seat for your child. United Airlines flights do not provide child restraint systems (CRS) or child safety seats.

 

Bassinets 

Complimentary bassinets facility is available for use on international flights only. These are available for customers traveling international segments in United Polaris business class on select 757, 767, 777, and 787 airplanes and in United Economy on 747, 757, 767, 777, and 787 airplanes. These are not available for passengers traveling in United First or United Business. If you require a bassinet, you can request it by calling the United Airlines customer support center at 1-800-864-8331 within the U.S. or the appropriate Worldwide Contact Center.

 

Unaccompanied children

Passengers ages between 5 to 15 years as of the travel date who travel without a parent or another adult age 18 or older are considered as unaccompanied children. They are required to use United Airlines' unaccompanied minor services. Children less than five years old will only be accepted if they're accompanied by an adult passenger age 18 or older. Tickets for an accompanied minor can be purchased online or through the United Airlines customer support center. Some specific United travel guidelines to keep in mind are as follows:

  • Unaccompanied children can only travel on United or United Express nonstop flights.
  • United Airlines does not offer unaccompanied minor service connecting to/from other airlines' flights.
  • Children below five years of age are not allowed to travel alone at United Airlines. They must be accompanied by another adult age 18 or older.
  • Children ages 15 to 17 may travel alone on any United or United Express flights.
  • The unaccompanied minor service fee is $150 for each direction of travel.

 

Benefits of unaccompanied minor service include pre-boarding, seating near the front of the plane (when available), and one complimentary food item that offer food for purchase.

Flying while pregnant

Currently, there are no such restrictions when expectant mothers can fly with United Airlines. No medical documentation is required if any woman is traveling before 36 weeks of pregnancy. However, if a woman traveling at or after 36 weeks of pregnancy must have the original and two copies of an obstetrician's certificate. The obstetrician certificate must be dated within 72 hours (3 days) before her flight departure.

 

Senior fares

United Airlines flights offer senior citizen fares to select travel destinations for travelers who are 65 and older. If you're above 65 years and more, you can choose the "seniors" category when booking on United Airlines' official website or ask when calling United Airlines customer support center. 

 

Group bookings

Passengers flying from the same city to the same destination in a group of ten or more can enjoy an early check-in and guaranteed airfare via United Groups.
